From the dark abyss into the light. That might be one way to describe db-Maui’s new EP. Five tracks that, like “Wish” with its Losing Control-style vocals reminiscent of Daniel Bell, clearly emerge from the depths, yet also reach for the light with a sense of hope. Then again, how could it be otherwise? db-Maui is an artist whose tracks always aim either to get people dancing or to draw them in with melody—ideally both. And he consistently achieves this with great feeling, deepness, and a relaxed old-school approach. This is someone who has absorbed the history of electronic music inside and out, transforming those influences into new productions that always carve out their own unique niche while telling stories that urgently need to be told. “From Below,” with its grumbling yet playful garage-inspired touches, evokes a Deep House version of Basement Jaxx. Meanwhile, the dreamy 303 line in “Your Smile” (Acid at Midnight Remix) gilds what may well be the EP’s finest track—a melodic and melancholic piece that nevertheless charges onto the dancefloor with energy and purpose. “Elves & Dwarfs” slowly lets the sun peek over the after-hours dancefloor, while “Black Rose,” driven by ist piano hook, ultimately turns its gaze toward a hopeful future and leaves listeners eager for more music from this wonderful artist.
