UK-based Auto-Pilot consists of Adrian Collier and Shaun Herbert, releasing together since 1995 (with interruptions) on labels such as Holophon or Syngate. According to Adrian, “The Atlantic Machine” can easily be considered their most emotional album: “I’d had a particularly tough and traumatic year and had been through a lot of emotional turmoil. Out of the darkness, came the seeds of this project. I drew upon all my thoughts, emotions and soul searching during this period, and as I came back into the light, I knew it was the time to write a concept album based on my experience. […] In fact, the title track is a representation of my salvation point. From there on in, the album represents my journey back to rediscovering where in life I needed to be.” Contrary to what one might expect in light of this background, “The Atlantic Machine” is an intrinsically optimistic, powerful and musically diverse journey, leading us from traditional ambient electronica via dub and post-rock excursions even as far as deep into a parallel pop universe of upbeat post-punk songs and emotional autotune ballads. Diversity is a direct result of Auto-Pilot’s multi-instrumentalism and manifold collaborations with artists like Canadian rapper Sham Art, bass player Malcolm Brown and (Do Not Resuscitate) sound engineer Greg Bonnier. Michal Jansen (Mastering Perfection) provided a well-balanced mastering to the entire album. “The Atlantic Machine” is the most beautiful as well as deeply personal documentation of Auto-Pilot’s dream-like journey back to the light.

Being an idealist is noble and deserves endorsement. That is exactly the belief of our Zurich-based artist Bernhard Gietz (better known as “Berni”), who releases wonderful tracks in between dub techno and house under this moniker (“Idealist”) since a few years on labels such as Deep In Dub or Dreiton. His latest release on Broque, the Defective Units EP, is dedicated to the little flaws, imperfections and surprises one has to face when working with analogue devices such as the ones from the Roland TB family. What leads us to another one of Berni’s big and longstanding passions: Acid. However, Berni’s tracks are far from culminating into wild 303-infernos, but embed acid lines in a very elegant manner into floating dub techno grooves. While some tracks lean more towards their Basic Channel roots, others embrace warm Detroit techno soul, but they always manage to nonchalantly close the gap between contemporary club standards and the retrospective view into dub techno history. In between these explorations, Idealist also sneaked in “Bad Times”, a true hymn made of deep after hour nu-disco sounds together with heartwarming and shyly filtered hooklines, which provides the perfect soundtrack for welcoming the sunrise after a good night out. Who would have thought that the courage to embracing imperfectionism could lead to such a perfect release?

The musical history of André Noller, better known as Landschall, dates back far into his past. His childhood sensations when listening to a clock radio while lying in bed with mum and dad left very deep impressions, as did initial pubertal steps as member of a rock band or his early enthusiasm for Fruity Loops and the like. Obviously, a lot of time has passed since then. But André’s excitement didn’t change at all. And that is hard to miss, particularly when listening to his latest EP on Broque, which sparkles with energy, verve and enthusiasm. Five brand-new and jamming tracks on “Cake & Communism” tell a virtuoso story of house and techno which wins over the hearts and minds of all listeners. With the bleepy yet twinkle-toed “Dein Gesicht” (featuring André’s very own voice) and the funky dubs of “Seamless Rolled”, the EP even has two true and unforgettable floor fillers in store. The same amount of commitment and honest passion led to the filter inferno “Anas Penelope”, a futuristic Detroit reminiscence (“Robotic Sex…”) and the hook lines of “Silverreuter” which are as simple as they are effective. Thank you so much André, Broque could not be any more grateful!

On his third EP on Broque, Stefan Schultz (alias Juno6) merges his musical influences and roots – ranging from Boards of Canada to the likes of Ricardo Villalobos and Jeff Mills – in the most direct and stunning way so far. Stefan is no stranger for most: his releases on Freude am Tanzen, Cargo Edition or Liebe*Detail gained a lot of attention as did his label “Oh!Yeah!” which he runs jointly with Sven Tasnadi and Daniel Stefanik. His new EP on Broque features five new, analogue electronic gems, which are only occasionally grounded on the dancefloor and wander off the beaten track to open up truly mind-bending perspectives. Techno history, personal reference points and state of the art sounds, are all melted into very unique and magical tracks. “Devils from Darkonia” clearly doesn’t need to adopt established dancefloor stereotypes but simply scores with original personality and character. The five tales on this EP could easily fill entire club nights, but for the moment, we are simply immensely grateful about this fantastic EP.
